... the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946. The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies.

Organe judiciaire principal de l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU). Elle a été instituée en juin 1945 par la Charte des Nations Unies et a entamé son activité en avril 1946. La mission de la Cour est de régler, conformément au droit international, les différends d’ordre juridique qui lui sont soumis par les États et de donner des avis consultatifs sur les questions juridiques que peuvent lui poser les organes et les institutions spécialisées de l’Organisation des Nations Unies autorisés à le faire.

La Cour permanente de Justice internationale (CPJI), devancière de la Cour internationale de Justice et dont la création était prévue par le Pacte de la Société des Nations, a tenu sa séance inaugurale en 1922; elle a été dissoute en 1946.

Todos los países miembros son ipso facto signatarios de los Estatutos de la Corte, que está constituida por 15 jueces elegidos por la Asamblea General y el Consejo de Seguridad, para términos de 9 años prorrogables.

Corte Internacional de Justicia: La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que el nombre oficial en español es "Corte Internacional de Justicia", y su sigla es "CIJ". Otras denominaciones, como "corte de La Haya" o "tribunal de La Haya", se escriben con inicial minúscula por no ser nombres propios de la institución.
