Ce terme a été créé par Aimé Laussedat en 1850. Par la suite, il a été délaissé au profit de photogrammétrie, calqué sur l'allemand Photogrammétrie proposé par A. Meydenbauer en 1897. La multiplication des types d'images rend nécessaire aujourd'hui la reprise du terme iconométrie, plus générique que photogrammétrie.
