Lorsqu'il atteint le couvert végétal, le rayonnement solaire qui n'est pas absorbé ou diffusé par l'atmosphère interagit avec les différents éléments caractéristiques de celui-ci. L'énergie incidente peut être absorbée, transmise et/ou réfléchie. La portion de l'énergie reçue par la végétation et qui est réfléchie, est appelée réflectance du milieu végétal.
