Séro-conversion - période qui correspond, après avoir été contaminé par le HIV, à l'apparition des anti-corps anti-HIV dans le sang. Dès qu'une personne est contaminée par le HIV elle peut, à son tour, le transmettre avant même d'avoir produit ses propres anticorps.

Les individus infectés par le HIV perdent peu à peu un certain type de cellules immunitaires (appelées lymphocytes T de type CD4) et leurs fonctions immunitaires, de sorte qu'ils deviennent vulnérables à toutes sortes d'infections, telles que la pneumonie, les mycoses et autres infections banales.
