Indice foliaire [...] Cet indice, souvent appelé LAI (initiales de l'expression anglo-saxonne : leaf area index), joue un rôle important dans l'absorption de la lumière et les échanges gazeux (photosynthèse, transpiration) d'un couvert végétal. Cet indice croît avec l'âge de la culture pour atteindre un maximum qui est souvent de l'ordre de 4 à 5, mais peut atteindre 10 dans certaines conditions. Pour les espèces amphistomatiques, c'est-à-dire, possédant des stomates sur les deux faces de la feuille, cas de la grande majorité des plantes annuelles cultivées, l'indice foliaire ne représente que la moitié de la surface réelle d'échange gazeux entre le feuillage et l'air.
