Modern technology makes of practical astronomical use an old theoretical curiosity: that a spinning liquid surface can, in principle, be used as the primary mirror of a telescope. Liquid mirrors have two main advantages over conventional glass mirrors: they are considerably cheaper, and it should be possible to build them to much larger diameters.

Pour fabriquer un miroir liquide, le chercheur place un liquide réfléchissant dans une cuvette à laquelle un moteur imprime un mouvement circulaire constant. Le liquide s'étale en une mince pellicule parfaitement lisse qui épouse la forme d'une parabole et qui peut ainsi faire office de miroir de télescope. Pour obtenir des images de qualité optique, il faut que les imperfections à la surface du liquide soient inférieures au millième de l'épaisseur d'un cheveu.
