One of the major inertial fusion energy reactor designs is HYLIFE-II which uses protective flowing liquid wall between fusion plasma and solid first wall. The most attractive aspect of this reactor is that protective liquid wall eliminates the frequent replacement of the first wall structure during reactor lifetime.

There are several different reaction chamber concepts to overcome the above listed issues. They span from dry wall to thick following liquid wall concepts.

La protection de la chambre [de réaction] peut être conçue suivant le schéma du mur sec, du mur mouillé ou du mur liquide [...] Le mur liquide. Tout matériau de structure a disparu et l'ensemble de la couverture est remplacé par un écoulement vertical d'un fluide (sel fondu) qui assure à la fois la protection, le transport de chaleur et la génération de tritium. Cet écoulement, au schéma relativement complexe, est constitué par un ensemble de jets fixes et de jets oscillants ayant une épaisseur totale de l'ordre du mètre et une vitesse d'écoulement de l'ordre de 10 m/s. La géométrie d'ensemble nécessite une attaque de la cible de type attaque indirecte.
