Comme méthode d'extinction active des feux de sodium, une poudre extinctrice du nom de Marcalina a été mise au point. Cette poudre contient des carbonates alcalins et du graphite. Non corrosifs, ces composants ne réagissent pas avec le sodium et ne forment à son contact aucun produit nocif. À haute température, cette poudre forme à la surface du sodium un film pâteux étanche isolant la surface du métal de l'air. Cette poudre permet d'éteindre les feux de sodium, quelles que soient leurs températures.
