Dans un matériau cristallin comportant des impuretés, par exemple, le désordre serait associé à une répartition aléatoire de ces impuretés; dire que le matériau est désordonné équivaut ici à dire que l'on est dans l'impossibilité d'indiquer en quels endroits précis sont situées les impuretés. À l'inverse, si les impuretés sont réparties de façon rigoureusement périodique, ou si elles sont toutes concentrées en une petite région du matériau ce qui veut aussi dire que l'on dispose de plus d'information sur le système - alors le qualificatif de "désordonné" ne convient plus: le matériau est plus ordonné que dans la situation précédente.
