Dans les incinérateurs à lits fluidisés, les déchets, dilacérés ou broyés, sont introduits dans un lit vertical fluidisé de matériaux inertes à une température de 525-625 °C. L'agitation importante et la dispersion entretenues au sein du lit fluidisé assurent un mélange poussé des produits et une grande efficacité de la combustion. Ce dispositif garantit également un parfait contrôle des températures du fait de la dissipation de chaleur par le support inerte fluidisé. On utilise parfois des grains de carbonate de sodium comme matériau inerte pour le lit fluidisé. Ceux-ci neutralisent les produits acides dans les gaz de combustion tels que les acides halogénés.
