Un bon exemple d'un matériau magnétique désordonné est fourni par l'alliage dilué cuivre-manganèse, noté CuMn, où des atomes de manganèse, porteurs de moment magnétique (qui constitue en quelque sorte un aimant élémentaire), sont dispersés au hasard dans une matrice de cuivre qui est elle-même non magnétique. Peu importent ici les détails de fabrication métallurgique [...] l'important est que les atomes magnétiques soient répartis de manière aléatoire, et qu'ils ne puissent plus changer de site, une fois l'échantillon formé. Il s'agit d'un désordre figé.
