On a MSDS, personal protective equipment which protects from chemical exposures is listed. This can include protective clothing, respiratory protection and eye protection.

Sometimes, personal protective equipment may be needed along with engineering controls. For example, a ventilation system (an engineering control) reduces the inhalation hazard of a chemical, while gloves and an apron (personal protective equipment) reduce skin contact.

La principal forma de exposición del personal a los solventes de limpieza es por inhalación y absorción a través de la piel. Por lo que cuando no se les utilice, los tanques deberán permanecer tapados y bien ventilados. Asimismo, se deberá utilizar de manera conjunta los dispositivos de ventilación y el equipo de protección del personal (respirador, guantes, etc.) para minimizar los riesgos potenciales de exposición.

A efectos del presente Real Decreto, se entenderá por equipo de protección individual, cualquier equipo destinado a ser llevado o sujetado por el trabajador para que le proteja de uno o varios riesgos que puedan amenazar su seguridad o su salud, así como cualquier complemento o accesorio destinado a tal fin.
