Un DON (disque optique numérique) peut comporter jusqu'à 10 (exposant 10) bits d'informations propres à l'utilisateur, mais non modifiables : il n'est pas possible de reboucher les trous. On est ainsi en présence d'une mémoire optique de type Draw (Direct read after write), dont le temps moyen d'accès est de 100 ms et la vitesse de transfert des données de 2 Mbits/s. Le disque lui-même tourne à faible vitesse (16 tr/mn) et sa durée de vie est estimée à dix ans.
