A silver-white, brilliant metallic element which bears the symbol Hg (for "hydrargyrum"), is found native (relatively rare) but is more commonly obtained by sublimation from cinnabar, its most important ore, is liquid at ordinary temperatures (in the 0-100°C range), bears the atomic number 80, the atomic weight 200.52, melts at -38.9°C, boils at 356.6°C, and has a density of 13.550 kg/m-3.

Élément chimique métallique d'un blanc argenté, de symbole Hg, de numéro atomique 80, de masse atomique 200,59, de masse volumique 13,6 g/cm³, extrait du cinabre, qui se présente à l'état liquide à la température normale, dont la température de fusion est de 38,87 °C et la température d'ébullition de 356,58 °C.

[Le] mercure (Hg) [est] un métal qui a la propriété de rester liquide à la température de la pièce. Puisque c'est un métal, il est dense et de là vient son utilité pour mesurer la pression barométrique. Le liquide est inséré dans un tube d'environ 40" de haut avec un petit réservoir. La hauteur de colonne de mercure correspond à la pression barométrique (34 pouces de mercure).

L'accélération de la pesanteur à sa surface est de 372 cm/s [carré], 2,6 fois plus petite que sur la Terre. La période de révolution autour du Soleil est de 88 jours terrestres.
