Merit Canada was established in November 2008 as a united national voice for eight different provincial open shop construction associations. Merit Canada is federally incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act. It succeeds the Canadian Coalition of Open Shop Construction Associations which [was] formed in 1999 to challenge the constitutionality of a compulsory union membership requirement to work in Quebec's construction industry.

Merit Canada a été créé en novembre 2008 pour servir de porte-parole national unique de huit différentes associations provinciales de la construction à atelier ouvert (adhésion facultative au syndicat et liberté d'embauche). Merit Canada est constitué en vertu de la Loi sur les corporations canadiennes et succède à la Canadian Coalition of Open Shop Construction Associations qui a été fondée en 1999 pour contester la constitutionnalité de l'adhésion syndicale obligatoire des travailleurs de l'industrie de la construction au Québec.
