Des travaux récents (Velasco and Fritsch 1987, Chen and Frank 1993, Emanuel 1993) ont mis en évidence que les larges systèmes orageux (appelés «mesoscale convective complexes» [MCC], en français «systèmes convectifs de méso-échelle») produisent souvent un vortex à cœur chaud, inertiellement stable, dans le champ des altostratus associés au MCC. Ces vortex de méso-échelle, d'une taille approximative de 100 à 200 km [75 to 150 mi] sont plus forts en moyenne troposphère (5 km [3 mi]) et n'ont pas de signature visible en surface.
