Parole, in criminal law, release from prison of a convict before the expiration of his term on condition that his activities be restricted and that the reports regularly to an officer. The convict generally remains under sentence, and the restrictions (as of residence, occupation, type of associates) and the supervision are intended to prevent a relapse into crime. Any violation of parole may result in return to imprisonment.

La libération conditionnelle est une mesure d'individualisation de la peine pour les condamnés qui manifestent des efforts sérieux de réadaptation sociale.Elle correspond à la mise en liberté d'un condamné avant la date d'expiration normale de sa peine d'emprisonnement ou de réclusion, sous condition de respect, pendant un délai d'épreuve, d'un certain nombre d'obligations. Au terme de ce délai d'épreuve et en l'absence d'incident, la personne condamnée est considérée comme ayant exécuté l'intégralité de sa peine.

Le directeur peut, à la demande d'une personne mise en liberté conditionnelle ou d'office, ou qui a le droit d'être mise en liberté d'office, l'héberger temporairement au plus tard jusqu à l'expiration légale de sa peine au pénitencier afin de favoriser sa réadaptation.
