The design of a nuclear rocket engine is basically quite simple. The reactor core is composed of multiple fuel rods containing plutonium or enriched uranium. The spontaneous decay of atoms in the fuel rods produces a weak background of fast neutrons.

Il existe un autre mode de propulsion, envisagé pour des vols vers la Terre et la Lune et des missions vers des planètes éloignées : le moteur-fusée nucléaire. Il serait au moins deux fois plus efficace que le moteur à hydrogène et à oxygène liquides (déjà très performant) [...] Ce type de moteur utilise de l'hydrogène liquide transformé en gaz et chauffé par un réacteur à fission nucléaire jusqu'à de très hautes températures. L'hydrogène ne brûle pas, traversant simplement la tuyère à pression très élevée et à très grande vitesse.
