Le polymère utilisé était un polysaccharide de poids moléculaire élevé. Comme il s'agissait d'une solution aqueuse, il n'y avait pratiquement pas de tension interfaciale entre la solution et l'eau injectée. En l'absence de ce facteur de stabilisation, l'interface subissait de brusques changements de direction, ce qui engendrait des motifs fractals.
