Les différents procédés utilisés pour la reproduction de séquences d'images animées permettent généralement de reproduire une image fixe extraite de la succession des images enregistrées. En arrêtant le défilement de la pellicule lors de la reproduction d'un film (projection de cinéma ou télécinéma), il est possible de visualiser isolément une image particulière. En présence d'un enregistrement vidéo, il est possible sur certains magnétoscopes de stopper le défilement du ruban magnétique. Les têtes vidéo de lecture restent cependant actives puisqu'elles sont entraînées en rotation par le tambour de tête.
