Les girouettes les plus courantes ont la forme de coqs mais les «patenteux» savent s'écarter du traditionnel coq de clocher pour leur donner les formes les plus diverses. On parle de «vire-vents» dans la Beauce, en Gaspésie et au Nouveau-Brunswick. Les gens diront encore «tournette», «tourniquette» et «moulinette» là où on consignerait «tourniquet» et «moulinet» mais sans donner à ces mots le sens que leur donne le parler populaire québécois.
