[La nitratine] cristallise dans l'holoédrie rhomboédrique et sa structure est identique à celle de la calcite. [Elle] se présente, dans la nature, en agrégats cristallins ou en grains. Clivage parfait suivant la face du rhomboèdre. Incolore à légèrement coloré. Éclat vitreux. Légèrement hygroscopique et très soluble dans l'eau.
