Les budgets d'erreur pour l'exactitude absolue viennent dans deux chiffres : une limite d'erreur, mesurée comme une distance (erreur circulaire) et un niveau de confiance (mesuré en pourcentage). Une interprétation est que les pourcentages de niveau de confiance des points sont transformés sur la distance d'erreur de la bonne réponse.

La précision est généralement associée à un niveau de confiance (probabilité). On parle de précision (incertitude) pour un niveau de confiance de 68 % lorsque la valeur réelle est comprise entre la valeur moyenne des mesures et plus ou moins une fois l'écart type. On parle de précision (incertitude élargie) pour un niveau de confiance de 95 % lorsque la valeur réelle est comprise entre la valeur moyenne des mesures et plus ou moins deux fois l'écart type.

The measure of probability that the actual characteristics of the population lie within the stated precision of the estimate derived from a sampling process. A sample estimate may be expressed in the following terms: "Based on the sample, we are 95% sure (confidence level) that the true population value is within the range of X to Y (precision)".

From a random sample of a specified population, one may set up an interval intended to delimit a characteristic parameter of the population. The probability of random samples yielding intervals that do include the correct value is determinable ... If the probability of getting correct intervals is set at .95, the interval is called a confidence interval with the confidence coefficient .95.
