L'opération de ravitaillement en vol est si courante que l'on en oublie les qualités qu'elle requiert non seulement de l'équipage du C-135F ravitailleur, mais aussi du pilote du ravitaillé, en l’occurrence un Jaguar. Le panier ne mesure que 60 cm de diamètre et ne peut être abordé que dans son tiers intérieur. L'approche doit être lente et progressive pour attraper le panier qui tangue au gré des turbulences. Une fois l'accrochage réussi, le pilote doit maintenir une vitesse, un cap et une altitude rigoureusement constant pendant les 5 à 8 minutes que dure l'échange du carburant. Le retrait s'effectue avec les mêmes précautions que la prise de contact en raison des risques de détérioration du panier qui entraînerait l'impossibilité pour le reste de la patrouille d'être ravitaillé.
