Contrats consistant à acheter ou à vendre un montant donné ou une quantité déterminée d'un certain sous-jacent (par exemple un actif financier, un indice ou une marchandise) à un prix convenu et à une date fixée d'avance.

OBS

Il peut s'agir de contrats négociés de gré à gré entre deux parties ou encore sur un marché organisé. L'accord bilatéral, conclu à une date donnée, n'est exécuté qu'à une date future fixée. Il oblige généralement l'une des parties à livrer le sous-jacent à cette date future, et l'autre partie à prendre livraison du même sous-jacent, aux conditions convenues. Certains types de contrats permettent le règlement par le versement d'un différentiel plutôt que par livraison du sous-jacent.

OBS

Dans certains contextes, puisqu'il n'y a pas livraison immédiate du sous-jacent, on a plutôt recours à l'expression «opérations à terme» comme équivalent de forwards and futures pour les opposer aux opérations au comptant.

Futures trading is the buying and/or selling of contracts for specified commodities for future delivery. Only price is negotiated. Delivery point, delivery month, quantity and grade are all specified by the Exchange in the description of each contract. The seller agrees to deliver the commodity according to the terms of the contract; the buyer agrees to accept it.

Les transactions à terme portent sur l'achat ou la vente, ou les deux, de contrats de marchandises déterminées à livrer ultérieurement. Seul le prix est négocié. Le point de livraison, le mois de livraison, la quantité et le grade sont spécifiés par la bourse dans chaque contrat. Le vendeur convient de livrer la marchandise selon la tener du contrat; l'acheteur convient de l'accepter.
