Network designers could combine optical logic and demultiplexing to build a rudimentary communications switch. The logic devices would determine whether some of the data should be unloaded from the incoming signal by reading the address of a packet - and, if so, the demultiplexer would switch the desired data to one of several output fibers for routing to the appropriate computer or subnetwork.

On envisage de combiner logique optique et démultiplexage pour construire un commutateur rudimentaire. Les dispositifs logiques détermineraient si certaines données doivent être déchargées du signal incident en lisant l'adresse du paquet; au cas où le déchargement serait spécifié, le démultiplexeur aiguillerait ces données vers l'une des fibres optiques disponibles pour les acheminer vers l'ordinateur ou le sous-réseau approprié.
