Il y a deux familles de récepteurs radars : Dans la première on utilise comme récepteur une cascade d'un filtre donnant la transmittance en amplitude et d'un filtre donnant la courbe voulue pour le temps de propagation de groupe en fonction de la fréquence. On a un récepteur dit à filtre adapté et, si le signal émis est modulé en fréquence, on dit que le radar est à compression d'impulsions, pour des raisons évidentes.
