Swallowing difficulties are due mainly to dysfunction in the oral and pharyngeal phases. Oral-pharyngeal dysphagia may be associated with poor activation of tongue and cheek muscles, cricopharyngeal dysfunction, and incomplete relaxation and incoordination of the upper-esophageal sphincter.
