Ammonium nitrate mixtures with carbonates or phosphates, are fertilizer compounds or mixtures that have significant oxidizing power and are therefore described as oxidizing materials under these Regulations. They are usually in the form of small gray coloured particles that are free flowing.

Thus it is used in the treatment of water for eliminating iron and manganese by precipitating ferrous and manganese salts in the form of ferric and manganic hydrates which can easily be removed by settling or filtration (fig. 3).
