L'oxygène singulet, 02, est une forme excitée de l'oxygène ordinaire : c'est une molécule d'oxygène dont on a réussi à «déplacer» momentanément l'un des électrons, ce qui la rend moins stable et donc susceptible de réagir plus facilement avec d'autres molécules. Ainsi, l'oxygène singulet est un oxydant à la fois plus puissant et plus sélectif que son homologue ordinaire. Toutefois, comme pour toutes les molécules excitées, l'accroissement de réactivité n'est pas le seul avantage que présente l'oxygène singulet : dans certaines circonstances, en effet, il est possible de faire revenir l'oxygène singulet dans son état ordinaire plutôt que de le faire réagir avec d'autres molécules, et ce retour à l'état fondamental s'accompagne d'une émission de lumière.
