Les papillomes inversés sont des tumeurs épithéliales qui méritent une attention particulière, malgré leur relative rareté et leur caractère non métaplasique initial. Elles naissent de l'ectoderme entourant la placide olfactive qui migre avec cette structure dans la cavité nasale et prend alors le nom de membrane de Schneider. Leur originalité tient : à leur nette tendance à la récidive incessante et à l'envahissement loco-régional, au fait que, comme toute tumeur malpighienne, elles peuvent être le siège d'un processus carcinomateux. D'aspect macroscopique parfois trompeur, pouvant évoquer un simple polype nasal commun, le papillome inversé se présente habituellement sous l'aspect «en choux-fleur» ou «en grappe de raisin» de couleur blanchâtre.
