Pneumoconiosis may be classified as either fibrotic or nonfibrotic, according to the presence or absence of fibrosis. Silicosis, coal worker pneumoconiosis, asbestosis, berylliosis, and talcosis are examples of fibrotic pneumoconiosis.

On distingue deux types [de pneumoconioses] : les pneumoconioses de surcharge, où les poussières n'agissent que par leur accumulation; les pneumoconioses fibrogènes (silicose, asbestose), plus graves, où les poussières provoquent une fibrose pulmonaire (développement d'un tissu fibreux), celle-ci évoluant même longtemps après la fin de l'exposition aux poussières.
