La métallisation des films plastiques se fait en condensant sur la surface du film des vapeurs d'aluminium sous vide. L'opération se réalise dans une enceinte étanche où l'on crée un vide très poussé [...] À l'intérieur de l'enceinte, une bobine de film support se déroule contre un cylindre refroidisseur. Face à ce cylindre, un creuset chauffé par induction fond de l'aluminium qui vaporise et va se condenser sur le film. Celui-ci est ensuite rebobiné à l'intérieur de l'enceinte. La couche d'aluminium déposée est très faible [...] La surface métallisée est parfaitement homogène et remarquablement brillante. Les films métallisés sont généralement les films polyesters et les polypropylènes bi-orientés. [...] Les polyesters et les polyamides métallisés entrent dans la composition de nombreux complexes. Dans le cas du polyester, il permet d'obtenir des imperméabilités à l'oxygène inférieures à 1 cm³/m³, ce qu'aucun matériau plastique simple ne peut obtenir.
