In Canada, light duty vehicles are the principal man-made emission source of oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons. The contribution of these emissions both directly and indirectly - through secondary atmospheric processes - to the air pollutant burden in and around urban centres and to long range transport impacts is described, as well as the projected decrease in these emissions that would result from applying more stringent emission standards to light duty vehicles.
