Subsequent to the introduction and application of magnesium and sodium bases, several two-stage sulfite pulping methods using these bases have been developed and utilized commercially. These methods are generally characterized by a dramatic change in cooking pH between the initial stage (for penetration and sulfonation) and the second stage (for dissolution and removal of the lignin).
