A physico-chemical conversion process provides a liquid fuel based on physical and chemical processes. The most important process so far is vegetable oil production from oil seed, and the esterification of this oil to fatty acid methyl ester as a substitute for diesel fuel. This technology is used on a large scale within Europe.

Les procédés de conversion physico-chimique donnent lieu à un combustible liquide moyennant une série de processus physiques et chimiques. Le procédé le plus important utilisé de nos jours est la production d'huile végétale à partir de graines d'oléagineux et l'estérification de cette huile pour obtenir un ester méthylique d'acide gras (communément appelé biodiesel) pouvant servir de succédané du gazole (alimentation des moteurs diesel).
