Avant de vidanger le lessiveur, on procède à une agitation par injection de vapeur («steam stripping, shake-up steaming») qui dure une quinzaine de minutes et qui facilite la vidange du lessiveur du fait du brassage de la masse de copeaux et de lessive. Cette pratique a toutefois l'inconvénient d'abaisser les propriétés mécaniques de la pâte. Une autre technique consiste à effectuer un brassage par recirculation («sluicing, cold blow») d'une partie de la liqueur résiduaire («black liquor, spent liquor»), évacuée par le robinet purgeur («blow-off cock, blow-off valve») situé au bas du lessiveur.
