Il est important de souligner que le prognathisme n'a pas la même signification pour les anthropologistes et pour les orthodontistes. Pour les anthropologistes, le prognathisme facial, c'est "l'allongement oblique de la face par sa projection en avant du crâne" (Hovelacke). Anomalía de la conformación bucal, debido a la cual, en unos casos, los dientes no pueden tomar contacto con el rodete dentario, porque la mandíbula hace saliencia con respecto al maxilar; se le llama dolicognatismo (prognatismo, boquino o "boca de chancho", como se le dice vulgarmente). En otros casos, el fenómeno es inverso, ya que los dientes vienen a tocar en pleno rodete y no en su borde exterior y aún en el paladar, como consecuencia de ser más corta la mandíbula.
