Gyroscopes mécaniques vibrants [...] Les plus répandus fonctionnent en mode gyromètre. Un des modes de résonance du corps élastique est entretenu à une amplitude déterminée. Quand l'appareil tourne autour d'un axe particulier, les forces résultantes de Coriolis, agissant sur les masses en mouvement du résonateur, excitent un second mode de résonance. [...] D'autres types de gyroscopes vibrants peuvent fonctionner en mode gyroscope (appelé aussi mode gyromètre-intégrateur), c'est-à-dire qu'ils fournissent directement l'angle parcouru dans l'espace inertiel.

Le gyroscope est un appareil capable de fournir une direction physique de référence et, corrélativement, une information de rotation angulaire, sous forme d'un écart angulaire, ou d'un angle total [...] compris entre 0 et 360°, vis-à-vis d'un référentiel absolu ou «inertiel». Le gyromètre est un appareil capable de fournir une information de vitesse angulaire, vis-à-vis d'un référentiel absolu (c'est-à-dire par rapport aux étoiles). Dans un certain nombre de cas, un même appareil peut être capable de fonctionner en gyroscope ou en gyromètre.
