Terme qualificatif caractérisant l'aptitude d'un rayonnement à traverser la matière; plus la couche de demi-atténuation est grande, plus le rayonnement est dur (par exemple : rayons X émis par un accélérateur linéaire ou un bêtatron).

L'exposition externe. Les rayonnements qui atteignent l'organisme en venant de l'extérieur peuvent être plus ou moins pénétrants. Ainsi les particules chargées d'électricité comme les électrons (ß) ou les particules [alpha] sur la trajectoire desquelles se forme un grand nombre d'ionisations sont, dans les tissus, freinées et arrêtées sur de courtes distances. Les particules [alpha] sont entièrement absorbées dans la partie cornée de la peau et les rayonnements ß n'atteignent, en général, que la couche basale de l'épiderme (parfois le cristallin lorsqu'il n'est pas protégé). Ce sont des rayonnements non (ou peu) pénétrants.

CONT

Contrairement aux rayonnements formés de particules chargées (ß, [alpha]), les rayonnements [gamma] et les neutrons sont des rayonnements pénétrants : ils font naître, de façon dispersée certes mais à l'intérieur des différents tissus ou organes internes, des particules chargées secondaires responsables des ionisations.
