En 1936, Hans Selye publie, dans la revue britannique Nature, un premier article sur le syndrome de l'adaptation, qui se déroule en trois phases : la réaction d'alarme, pendant laquelle les forces de défense sont mobilisées; le stade de résistance où le corps s'adapte à l'agent stressant et le stade d'épuisement, lorsque l'agent stressant est assez puissant et durable.
