Some organisms can respire in the absence of air: this is anaerobic respiration. This does not release so much energy and it produces much more toxic waste products [as opposed to aerobic respiration]. La respiración anaeróbica se produce sin la presencia del oxígeno libre; los productos finales de la respiración se componen de gas carbónico y algunos compuestos orgánicos simples, como el alcohol etílico (C2H5OH). En la respiración anaeróbica, el oxígeno también forma parte activa de las reacciones de oxidación; no obstante, las células no reciben el oxígeno desde el exterior, sino que éste se obtiene de la propia célula.
