1. Pressions de terrains et soutènement. 2. Pression définitive après l'ouverture d'une galerie. 1er cas : la roche résiste. Dans ce cas les efforts ne dépassent pas la limite élastique de la roche; autrement dit, celle-ci se déforme légèrement avec contraction verticale et dilatation vers le vide de la galerie. Puis les mouvements s'arrêtent. La galerie trouve un équilibre naturel et cela même en l'absence de soutènement.
