Depuis une dizaine d'années, l'utilisation chez les plantes pérennes des outils moléculaires développés chez les plantes annuelles, en particulier des marqueurs facilement transférables et utilisables en routine comme les microsatellites, la cartographie génétique et les techniques d'analyse des caractères quantitatifs, a permis d'envisager une nouvelle approche, la sélection assistée par marqueurs ou SAM. Celle-ci s'appuie sur les recherches d'amont qui permettent d'identifier les régions génomiques contenant les caractères d'intérêt et les marqueurs qui leur sont liés, ainsi que sur le développement de techniques permettant le génotypage à haut débit d'un grand nombre d'individus.
