Semipermanent dyes are more highly complicated chemically than color rinses. They have complex acid-alkali formulas, usually containing a thioglycollate (also used in permanent wave products) or some other sulfur-derivative compound.

Du point de vue chimique, les teintures semi-permanentes sont beaucoup plus complexes que les rince-colorants, avant tout par leur formule acide-alcaline qui contient généralement un composé thioglycolique (utilisé aussi dans les solutions de permanente) ou quelque autre dérivé sulfurique.

Les colorants semi-permanents sont constitués de molécules d'une grosseur moyenne qui s'infiltrent dans la cuticule du cheveu et donne à la chevelure, par oxydation, une nuance et un reflet artificiel. On les appelle semi-permanents car leur effet ne dure qu'un temps limité et ces colorants s'éliminent graduellement après trois ou quatre shampooings.
