Le virus d'immunodéficience humaine (VIH) est le virus qui cause le syndrome d'immunodéficience acquise (sida). Le VIH attaque le système immunitaire, causant ainsi une maladie chronique progressive, rendant les gens atteints vulnérables aux infections opportunistes et aux cancers.

Au début, l'acronyme «sida» était écrit en majuscules. Aujourd'hui, il est généralement utilisé comme substantif, et s'écrit donc en minuscules.

OBS

Le terme «syndrome d'immunodéficience acquis» est à éviter. Selon la définition du CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), c'est l'immunodéficience qui est acquise et non le syndrome.

Enfermedad causada por el VIH [virus de inmunodeficiencia humana], virus que destruye los linfocitos denominados T4 [timodependientes 4] o células helper (células que protegen al organismo de infecciones y de algunos tipos de cáncer).

[Cuando se hace referencia al sida], se habla de un conjunto de síndromes, como el síndrome de insuficiencia respiratoria, síndrome de mala absorción intestinal, síndrome meníngeo y otros más, habitualmente con predominio de uno de ellos. "Inmunodeficiencia" significa que el sistema inmunitario está disminuido y no es capaz de defender eficazmente al organismo contra el ataque de microorganismos y "adquirida" significa que no se transmite por herencia, no es congénita y tampoco aparece por el envejecimiento, sino que se obtiene por alguna de las tres formas de transmisión que son vía sanguínea, sexual y perinatal.

sida: La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que la palabra "sida", que procede de la sigla SIDA (síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida), está lexicalizada (como láser u ovni) y se escribe con minúscula por ser el nombre común de una enfermedad, como gripe o diabetes.

Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) is the Swedish government agency for bilateral international development cooperation and most of Sweden's cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe. Sida is lead by a board and a director general and, for its research activities, by a research council.

En 1995, l'organe connu sous le nom d'Agence suédoise d'aide au développement international (ASDI) a été remplacé par l'Agence suédoise de coopération au développement international (même sigle, ASDI). Cette dernière a été créée pour permettre à la Suède d'adopter une approche plus coopérative et plus globale de la coopération au développement, et de mieux réagir à l'évolution du contexte international. Elle résulte de la fusion de cinq agences suédoises d'aide au développement qui avaient été fondées ces 30 dernières années.
