A hormone in cattle that regulates growth and milk production.

CONT

Many dairy producers use the hormone, but the practice is controversial because the use of bST may increase the incidence of mastitis (udder infection) in cows, and the long-term human health effects of the slightly increased hormone levels in the milk from treated cows have not been established.

OBS

It can also be produced artificially by genetic engineering and used to increase milk yields.

Les améliorateurs de performance issus de la biotechnologie sont administrés aux animaux ou aux poissons par l'alimentation, de manière régulière ou par période pour stimuler leur productivité et/ou améliorer leur rapport viande/graisse. La somatotropine bovine (BST) ou hormone de croissance bovine est un de ces améliorateurs de performance. Il s'agit d'une protéine hormonale hypophysaire qui stimule non seulement la croissance osseuse et l'anabolisme protéique, mais aussi la galactopoïèse (augmentation de la sécrétion lactée au cours d'une lactation établie chez les bovins). De nos jours, la BST peut être produite par génie génétique à l'échelle industrielle.

Selon le service du dictionnaire de l'Académie française le 27 janvier 2000, la graphie du terme «somatotropine» est erronée et donc à éviter; cependant, l'expression «somatotropine bovine» est employée couramment dans les textes de médecine vétérinaire.

Du point de vue linguistique, l'abréviation «BST» est à éviter dans les textes français, cependant les scientifiques de langue française l'emploient couramment.

La BST [por sus siglas en inglés] puede ser producida sintéticamente, utilizando la tecnología de ADN recombinado. El producto resultante se llama somatotropina bovina recombinante (rBST), hormona de crecimiento bovino recombinada (rBGH), [u] hormona de crecimiento artificial. Se administra a la vaca por inyección y se utiliza para aumentar la producción de leche.
