Des sous-populations qui s'opposent sur des enjeux de reconnaissance, de participation ou d'indépendance, se distinguent par des marqueurs -- langue, religion, origine, etc. -- qui sont considérés comme suffisamment forts pour faire de chaque groupe une sous-population bien identifiable, souvent stable dans le temps. De mécanismes comme l'endogamie communautaire, la proximité territoriale, le partage d'un style de vie commun, etc., il découle une certaine autonomie de reproduction démographique de ces sous-populations. L'autonomie démographique peut se manifester par la croissance différentielle. Les sous-populations ne sont en effet pas toutes soumises à des conditions uniformes de mortalité, de natalité et de migrations.
