CONT

In futherance of the objects of this Act, the Minister may, with the approval of the Governor in Council, make grants to any agency, organization or institution that is carrying on activities in the field of fitness or amateur sport.

OBS

The beneficiary may be a specific institution, a corporation, or even an individual; the gift may be a sum of money, but when the government is the benefactor, it is often a tract of land or a valuable franchise ...

OBS

La subvention est accordée à la discrétion de l'organisme subventionneur. Il en établit lui-même le bénéficiaire et le montant et peut fixer des conditions à satisfaire. 2) On distingue, selon leur destination, trois types de subventions : la subvention d'équilibre (balancing subsidy), la subvention d'exploitation (operating grant), appelée aussi subvention de fonctionnement, et la subvention d'investissement (capital grant), appelée aussi subvention d'équipement.

OBS

Le terme subside, parfois employé sous l'influence de l'anglais pour rendre subsidy, a un sens plus large lorsqu'il désigne une somme versée à un particulier ou à un groupement soit à titre d'aide ou de subvention, soit en rémunération de services. 2) Le mot octroi au sens de subvention est une impropriété à éviter.

OBS

On ne reconnaît aujourd'hui au mot «octroi» que la signification suivante : «Action d'accorder quelque chose». Il n'y a donc pas lieu de l'employer au sens de «chose accordée» et d'en faire ainsi un synonyme du mot «subvention».

A financial benefit granted by a government to producers of goods often to strengthen their competitive position.

CONT

The effect of a government subsidy is to lower the final price of a product or service, which is why subsidies can become an international trade issue. The most common examples are direct payments by government to industry to help finance a large-scale project such as a major oil project, to help fund the costs of developing a new technology, to investigate foreign markets, or to locate an activity in a slow-growth region of the country. Subsidies can consist of grants, low-interest loans, or tax incentives.

OBS

The subsidy may be direct (e.g., a cash grant) or indirect (e.g., low-interest export credits guaranteed by a government agency).
