Tobacco was grown and used by Amerindians throughout the Western Hemisphere before the arrival of the Europeans. ... In 1612, John Rolfe harvested his first tobacco crop, having learned about tobacco farming from the Indians. He sent the first cargo of tobacco to England in 1614.

La culture du tabac remonte, il est vrai, aux premiers jours de la colonie qui virent les premiers Français établis sur les rives du Saint-Laurent adopter rapidement l'habitude de fumer des indigènes et cultiver leurs propres champs de tabac. Il ne s'agissait, cependant, que d'un mode de culture très primitif copié servilement sur celui des Indiens; et une ordonnance émise par la France, quelques années plus tard, pour interdire la vente au détail du tabac au Québec n'allait certainement pas inciter le colon à améliorer la qualité et la quantité de ses récoltes.
